The Virginia Capital Trail (VCT) is a 52 mile paved, pedestrian and bicycle path that follows one of the earliest inland routes in North America. The Trail was first blazed by Native Americans including the Indians of the Powhatan Confederacy and later by the colonists from the first permanent English settlement in 1607. The VCT connects Virginia's past and present capitals of Jamestowne, Williamsburg and Richmond along a scenic corridor that links Revolutionary and Civil War national battlefields, historic James River plantations and the homes of two U.S. Presidents, a nature preserve, and the Richmond Kanawha Canal Walk.
The VCT provides both recreational access and a safe off-road alternative for Transamerica cyclists (Bike Route 76) along the Scenic Route 5 corridor and was recently designated as the mid-point link for the East Coast Greenway. Interpretive signage, kiosks and other enhancements are being added by the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation. This Trail was completed in October of 2015. Additional information regarding the VCT can be found on the website: http://virginiacapitaltrail.org
